ELRA attends WARDAT 2016

WARDAT 2016, the First Workshop on Arabic Dialect Technologies took place in Abu Dabhi on November 14-16, 2016.

Organized by Nizar Habash and Houda Bouamor on the campus of NYUAD (New York University Abu Dabhi), the workshop gathered 40 participants among which a large number of researchers from Middle-East universities who were expected to address the following:

• Discuss the state-of-the-art in modeling and analyzing Arabic dialects.
• Identify the challenges and opportunities in the study of Arabic dialects.
• Co-formulate a roadmap for future research on Arabic dialects.
• Develop a worldwide network of researchers in Arabic dialect technologies.
• Bridge the gap between research on Arabic dialects in linguistics and computer science.
 
Khalid Choukri chaired a panel dedicated to Harvesting DA Resources, covering the various sources of raw and processed data, raising the challenges (copyright issues, anonymization, etc..) and making recommendations for identifying all existing resources and compiling them in a common set, and have them sharable under a permissive agreement.
